For more than a century, Paul E. Bolding American Legion Post 7 has stood beside the veterans and citizens of Hall County.
Our story is one of resilience, service, and community - and in many ways, it mirrors the history of Gainesville itself.
1919 - Our Beginning
When World War I ended, local veterans returned home determined to continue serving their community.
In August 1919, just months after The American Legion was founded nationally, Paul E. Bolding American Legion Post 7 received its charter, making it one of the oldest civic organizations in Hall County.
Those first meetings were held in the Hall County Courthouse, where local veterans began building an organization dedicated to service, patriotism, and fellowship.
Finding a Home
As our membership grew, so did our need for
a permanent place to gather.
Over the years the Post would call several locations home, including the Cinciolo Home on Spring Street, the third floor of the historic Gainesville Herald Building, and later Odd Fellows Hall on the downtown square.
These weren't just meeting places - they became gathering places where veterans supported one another, planned community projects, and strengthened the bonds formed during military service.
Resilience Through Adversity
Our history has never been without challenges.
A fire at one early meeting location destroyed furniture, Honor Guard ceremonial rifles, and even the instruments of the famous "Drunken Bugle Corps."
Then, in 1936, one of the deadliest tornadoes in Georgia history devastated downtown Gainesville. The Gainesville Herald Building, which housed the Post, was destroyed.
Many organizations might have disappeared.
Post 7 did not.
Our members simply found another place to meet and continued serving the community.
That spirit of resilience still defines us today.
Building a Permanent Home
In 1946, Post 7 purchased the historic
Chattahoochee Club property on Riverside Drive.
For nearly eighty years, this property has served as our home - a place where generations of veterans, families,
and neighbors have gathered for meetings, patriotic celebrations, community events, and one of Gainesville's longest-running Fourth of July traditions.
Today
While we are proud of our history,
our focus is firmly on the future.
Today, Paul E. Bolding American Legion Post 7 is working to become more than a meeting place for veterans. Our goal is to build a place where veterans, families, and our community feel welcome - a place where people gather, friendships are formed, and service continues long after the uniform comes off.
We're not there yet, but we're committed to moving in that direction. Every new member, volunteer, community partner, and family who walks through our doors helps us take another step toward that vision.
As we continue on with our second century of service, we remain guided by the same principles that have sustained this Post since 1919: service, patriotism, camaraderie, and a commitment to our community.
